Depends on year. Different thickness of cardstocks. I will recommend that you consider locking D-ring binders.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Yes use the thickness of binder by the size needed. 1 inch to 4 inch for me. Most of them is in 1 1/2 inch 18 cards per sheet so I can store 5 albums in a milk case. I like clear view covers so I can print Cover pages and Spine title for easy ID of what is in album.
I like a small pic of the card at botoom of spine so I can help with remembering card design. Was a whole lot easy for some reason in the early 80's

Robert “It breaks your heart. It is designed to break your heart. The game begins in the spring, when everything else begins again, and it blossoms in the summer, filling the afternoons and evenings, and then as soon as the chill rains come, it stops and leaves you to face the fall alone. You count on it, rely on it to buffer the passage of time, to keep the memory of sunshine and high skies alive, and then just when the days are all twilight, when you need it most, it stops. Today, October 2, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped and summer was gone.” ― A. Bartlett Giamatti robertkimble.us/tradingcards

Well, I lucked out my son was renovating his Physical Therapy Office and system. He had loads of D-ring binders he was replacing, they are monsters like 5" thick......they are now residing in my cardrooms ready to be filled.
I find with my collection, a set/binder would be impossible. So I developed the value binder system; if a card matches or exceeds a certain value, it's in the binder, if not or just a common it remains in the set box. Example, 1980-1985 the card must be worth say $3.00, in the album it goes....$.50 in the set box it stays. Works for me.

i use Wilson Jones 3'' hanging binders... they are a litte expensive for a binder , but they are able to hang in a file cabinet and dont bunch pages like a D ring does.

Not the cheapest (though they do run somewhat frequent coupons), but I like that these are fully enclosed, preventing sagging and dust: https://www.unikeep.com/binders-and-accessories/3-ring-binders/ IIRC, it takes two 1.5" binders for a 792 card Topps set.
Probably not economic for mid-80s onward, but I've heard great reviews from those who like nice vintage sets in binders. Whatever you choose to do, don't overload the binder with so many pages they start to wrap around the ring and cause indentations on the cards. 5" is too thick of a binder for cards IMHO.

I would second cl_kyle post. Unikeep is the best way to go. They just had a sale. I would recommend calling. The more of them you order the cheaper they get. I have 30 binders on the way as we speak.

Sure, I don't like overloading any binder, that's why these 5" ones are great for me. Easy to turn the pages and they hold lotsa value cards from all years, makers etc. They work for me. Thanks, lotsa good ideas.
