The prices on the DB are entirely user submitted, so they can be totally accurate, or as accurate as a 2 year old hitting a bunch of random numbers.  There are lots of examples of cards that are spot on, but there are just as many that seem to have been submitted by people off in la-la land.  The best thing to do is use this as a baseline, and if you think you have a better idea of what a card is worth, definitely submit that price.  The price listed is a median of the prices that have been submitted, so you may need to submit the "correct" price a few times before the price listed will match that.

I tend to submit higher end cards using "auction" prices when they end on Ebay. I think if a bunch of them are recorded, it can give a good round-about price on those cards or cards not priced due to scarcity. Book prices are fine too, but as demand changes so can the price, and they aren't updated as often as they need to be to be accurate.

While frequently helpful to some of us, it is unlikely that even a median price for any given card will appease the majority of collectors here, or anywhere for that matter. You may do well to reference your own submitted value for cards in your own collection when needed. Ultimately, you have the final word on what your cards are worth--to you.  : )

 I had given it a shot for a bit, updating from beckett so as to have an idea what my collection was worth... but it turned out to be a fruitless effort.  I was finding Pro Set commons priced anywhere from $2 to $10,000, bumping my collection value up and the reality down... now all I use it for is to impress friends with the supposed database value, then inform them that the value of my collection is probably 10% or less what is stated.

If a card came in a box of cereal, do we submit the price of the cereal?

 Lol.  would you buy the card without the cereal at that price?

 I just enter the price of the card, at the price I bought it, when I bought it. I believe if enough of us do that, sooner or later it has to be a realistic value.

i got a 2012 topps football andrew luck rabbits foot in a lot of luck cards i bought for ten bucks  .so if i enetered it at  lets say 2 bucks thats forever going to lower the value of that card on the DB. i always thought you should need permission and guidlines to add values. too many cards are valued way to low or way too high from people adding unrealistic prices

I ignore the prices altogether.  There is an option somewhere that prevents them from showing up on my screen.  I have no intention of selling any of my cards, so it makes no difference to me what they are "worth".  Also, if I entered prices, that would show me how much money I spend on cards, and I certainly don't want that!!
