Card: #9 Mascot

“ Mascots are great! But is mascot really his name? ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Da Bird! Nice Mascot sticker. Love those mascots. I gladly give stray mascot cards a good home (except for the manupatch mascot cards blech.) It is interesting that the Orioles Mascot doesn't have a name it just seems to be the Orioles "bird" or mascot. Something like Ollie or Oscar the Oriole would work. ” -captkirk42

“ awesome! ” -parsley24

“ He looks so meek! ” -torald

“ Righteous! ” -bpaul14

“ Best RCOTD ever. But I've never understood why Topps is so inconsistent in using a mascot's name. ” -switzr1

“ Wonder why it just says mascot instead of "the oriole bird" or something like that, but the card is nice in itself ” -BasketbalHQ

“ Wouldn't it suck if you had a mascot card and nobody believed it was you who was wearing the costume. ” -CardFlipper1974

“ Hey, the Oriole Bird! Go O's! ” -CollectingAfterDeath

“ Not sure who would want to collect this type of card. To each his own. ” -Phil

I remember when I was a kid I was at a game with my cousins in old Milwaukee County Stadium, Brewers playing the Orioles.  We met a woman who was apparently a huge Orioles fan and she wore one of these mascot suits to the game.  It was fairly gross.

Hey Billy he does not have a tradional mascot name. In fact he is listed as The Oriole Bird in mascots lists.

Thanks for the info. That's not very creative.

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

Bit lazy not putting the mascot's name on there.

As I recall, some of the "early" mascot cards of the Royals said simply Mascot or Kansas City Royals instead of Sluggerrr.  The name was always Sluggerrr, although the spelling has changed. (Originally there were 3 g's.)   I wondered why it wasn't listed as such.  I just figured the person in charge at Topps was too lazy to do a search for the name.

There are some strange inconsistencies in this set/checklist.  Like #81 is listed as TC for Team Card, while most others are MAS for Mascot.  The cards themselves are inconsistent in the labels.  I love Mascot Cards anyway!

I always wonder if the name thing is a licensing deal.  I don't think mascots have a union, since none of them can talk, and they would have to pay their dues in peanuts and crackerjack.  But Stomper, the beloved Oakland Elephant mascot, has been called Stomper on a few cards, but nowadays just gets Oakland Mascot, despite other mascots in the same sets having their names on cards.

By the way, there is a mascot Hall of Fame, up near Chicago, and Boomer, the Pacers mascot, was among the 2020 inductees.  The governor of Indiana actually made the presentation speech for the Colts mascot.  It's a pretty big deal.  I gotta go there someday.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.
