Year: 1993

Set: Triple Play (Rate)

Card: #161 Ramon Martinez

“ Well, sometimes when I am working with my scans, the names are so small I have no idea which letter file to move a card to until I bring it up full screen. That would certainly not be the case here! In all my years of being on this website, and reading the card blogs, I don't think I've ever seen this design before. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ I loved Triple Play. Affordable for a kid on a budget. I couldn't always convince my parents to pick up a full price Topps or Donruss pack and rarely could get Ultra or Stadium Club but Triple Play or Collector's Choice I could usually get. ” -davidhandberry

“ Nice card. Simple and to the point. Good photo on the back too. My only complaints are I wish the background on the front image could have some level of focus and full stats on the back. ” -chvlDm

“ It's like the card companies join forces to say we refuse to offer collectors any mint cards , black bordering should never exist as it chips and frays too easily, just not up to par like Ramon wasn't to his Bro Pedro. ” -baseballcardstoreca

“ a parallel set not needed.... ” -parsley24

“ I can't put my finger on exactly why, but I have always been a fan of this design. The back lacks the "full stats" most love, but I think the large profile pick and typographical info more than makes up for it. ” -rmpaq5

“ One of those 1990s sets that I hated the first time I saw them but in recent years have appreciated them. At one time recently I may have been tempted to think about chasing the set. These are much better than the more recent cartoon Triple Play sets. ” -captkirk42

“ Prefer this version of Triple Play over the more modern cartoon like releases. ” -rmitchell6700

“ Triple Play was nice. Good card! ” -RoyalChief

“ Triple Play was a fun, affordable and -- at least in terms of the '93 release -- nice looking product. ” -mkaz80

“ I vaguely remember Triple Play, but the card doesn't look familiar. It isn't bad, but it isn't great. ” -muskie027

I actually enjoyed the Little Hot Shots cards that show the players as kids. Reminds me of when I played Little League ball. Always makes me smile.

Out of the 3 years (1992-94), this was the best set (IMHO).  If I remember correctly, in the movie "Major League" there was a Roger Dorn card with this design.

captkirk42, I have an extra set if you would be interested in a trade.

These were fun cards!   Nice to feature Ramon, as most of Us know plenty about HOF Brother Pedro.  In all my years of running around in Dodger Town (Vero Beach FL), Ramon was truly one of the most personable and friendliest Dodger Players ever!!

Yours in The Journey - Felix
