Year: 1990

Set: Donruss (Rate)

Card: #88 Dave Smith

“ I've said it before but I like this design. I know most do not. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Good ol' 1990 Donruss! Ya know, if you put the awful red border aside, this is actually a pretty great design. Certainly era-appropriate, but it even ages well, in my opinion. But, yeah, the red is a real turn-off. ” -mkaz80

“ I will always like this set, I know that many people now hate it but it is one of those sets that I remember being excited about as a kid. I went to Astros games, to see the Braves as a kid and remember these awful uniforms, still can't believe they made it past the pitch meeting. ” -davidhandberry

“ This card was scanned into the database 10 years ago, my oh my, where does the time go? ” -Gunny

“ always loved the spackle on the side of this set ” -Thunderfoot

“ Nice Original Donruss licensed card. This is a set from the over produced years, like the Fleer 1991 set, that doesn't get much love from collectors. Well then that is more for me. ” -captkirk42

“ Wasted a good year working on this set as a kid. ” -parsley24

“ A classic! 29 years old! Must be valuable. ” -cjjt

“ Love when these pop up on RCOTD. I love these! ” -muskie027

I love the look of this set. More image, less graphics is better. Only negative is that the terms Junk wax, over production jump into my head with this set.

i always felt this was a perfect design representing the 90's. i didn't like this but comparing to 88 and 89 it was briliant!

Yep 1990 approx. the middle of the "Overproduction" years. Some members on this forum don't like the "J" word and especially not the "JW" term. What the heck do they have against Jehovah's Witnesses I'll never know. cheeky

I would love this set remade ala-Topps Archive style. Same design, same texture, same paper stock, today's players.

One of those sets that I have over 13,000 commons in dupes ten times over.  Don't like the red borders but better than 1989 and 1991 sets.

I bought a few boxes of this a couple years ago for cheap and built a set from packs with my then 8 year old son. I can't say I love the set but it is truly unique and easily distinguishable from other sets. I will forever remember these for the amount of wax staining from the packs and the Nolan Ryan variations. I do like the design better than 88, 91, and 92 Donruss. 89 I am a bit more fond of but that may be more tied to the rookie class that year.

If I could go back in time and stop my stupid 14 year old self from doing anything, it would be to stop buying packs of these and 1990 Bowman.  I was never a set builder, and was always just a player collector, but for some dumb reason, I would not stop buying packs, even though I could just wait a couple of weeks and get the singles I needed from a dealer or another collector.  So much money wasted.

Yet another dastardly Donruss designs. Take it or leave it, nothing special
