Year: 1993

Set: Leaf (Rate)

Card: #47 John Olerud

“ When I was younger, I always thought these cards were "high class" because of the foil stamping. Now, not so much. ” -carthage44

“ A Blue Jay from the glory days ” -dobbie

“ Nice looking set. Downside - the cards were glossed so heavily they stuck together. Upside - the Godzilla photos on the back. ” -Id8jlb8666

“ I like how Leaf had all of its sports cards in similar styles. ” -Howintensive

“ Wow, I'm amazed to see this...because the front of this design was essentially ripped off by Wheels for the 1994 High Gear set. I've never seen the year older baseball set before. The back is cool. Got a Godzilla theme going on :) ” -Billy Kingsley

“ I would like the front better if the player's position(s) was listed. The superimposition of the player over the cityscape on the reverse is STILL odd. And I want career stats, year by year, not just last year and the totals. Do like the fronts. ” -vrooomed

“ "Why is that dude carrying his bat in the field?" - Rickey Henderson ” -UNC_Samurai

“ 2nd favourite all time Blue Jay.I didn't know about this set,I like good front & back. ” -uncaian

“ I liked the design on the card set, but hard to beat the 1990 set! ” -Joshua825

“ Just wondering if John also wore the helmet to the john. ” -NJDevils

“ I loved this set when it came out. The foil team logo and the cityscape backgrounds were my favorite parts. You didn't really see cards like that prior to this set. I think each team has two cityscapes, except I think the Marlins and Rockies only have one. ” -duaned99

“ Helmet at bat and in the field. ” -jlaz10

“ Olerud rips another....I always liked this guy. ” -flcardtrader

“ "...and Godzilla is out on a grounder to third... ” -volbox

Olerud was a great player and a fan friendly player. Don't like the card design. Olerud’s choice of headgear stems from a near tragic incident he endured during his college years; while attending Washington State University in 1989, Olerud suffered a brain hemorrhage and an aneurysm during a morning workout. Though he recovered, doctors advised him to wear a protective batting helmet while playing first base or pitching (he was a two-position player in college), in order to protect against line drives and collisions with baserunners that might result in contact with the skull.

The Rockies and Marlins have two cityscape backgrounds, too.

One of those good looking sets that were destroyed by over production and a poor checklist.
