Year: 1981

Set: Topps (Rate)

Card: #135 Gorman Thomas

“ Love it! ” -carthage44

“ First set I ever collected. Also, Bruce Sutter striking out Gorman Thomas to end the 1982 World Series is my favorite sports memory of my childhood. ” -switzr1

“ This guy hit more home runs than Paul Molitor, Robin Yount, Kirk Gibson and has 9 more than Derek Jeter. However, a .225 career batting average isn't gonna punch your ticket to the Hall (for what that's worth nowadays). ” -Id8jlb8666

“ Outfield, based on the photo I can only assume, means outside the field, looking in? ” -Billy Kingsley

“ This is really a lame card design, but it's also a fine portrait of Stormin' Gorman, because it makes you realize that in a not-too-radically-different timeline, he could be looking out thru barbed wire in a prison exercise yard in the same pose. ” -revnorb

“ Another one of my scans and in a set that I like. The 1981 Topps set contains some Baseball greats while the set is reasonably priced. ” -sltyeager

“ Looks like he's waiting to be adopted. ” -MAS

“ YES!!! ” -SFC Temple

“ Back when spring training fields were high school-quality. ” -jlaz10

A Milwaukee legend -- from South Carolina, but he was blue collar to the core and, as a result, fit in to the culture in Milwaukee in a way that neither Robin Yount nor Paul Molitor could or did. The Brewers lost a lot of fans when they traded Gorman for Rick Manning in 1983.

Yount, Molitor, or Jeter didn't/won't make the HOF for their power numbers....Gibson is known more for one homerun than anything else he ever did.

Someone said this is a lame card design.. and maybe by today's standards it is. But remember, 1981 was just as baseball cards were starting to explode in popularity. The so called modern era was just starting. Cards were mostly for kids. I was 6. This was the first set I ever collected. And to this day the only set Ive ever built entirely from buying packs. To the 6yo me, that design looked good. I loved the cap with the team logo in it.. the baseball with the topps logo.

When I got back into collecting a little more than a year ago my first goal was to find this set. It will always be my favorite.

Agreed suomibear8. Apples and oranges. He 's about 2000 hits shy of the hall and those guys except for Gibson, whom I despise and will not and forevermore refuse to own a card of (lifetime A's fan here). Just found it interesting that a guy 9 out of 10 baseball fans have likely never heard of ranks above those household names in the most hallowed of baseball statistics.

Yeah, it is surprising how some of the stats of older, lesser known guys match up to today's players. There were a lot of quiet, good players back then who don't get the recognition now.
