**SaintOrm’s “4th Annual” TCDb Giveaway**

As the title states, this is my fourth giveaway on TCDb. I have done “jersey math” for Topps Gold hockey sets, “fastest fingers trivia” for racing card lots, and last year’s “choose your own adventure” for a share of a $1000 prize pool. This year, it’s all about the number 4: my 4th giveaway, the 4th of July, and some “four-midable” math.

It wouldn’t be a proper baseball card event without a little nostalgia, so let’s turn back the clock, forty years ago, to 1984. More fours… get used to it!

I was in high school at the time, and my math teacher gave us a “fun” assignment one day, known as the “Four 4s” problem. The rules are simple, create a mathematical equation for each number from 1 to 100 that can use any calculator button functions (+, -, *, /, square root, etc.), but can only include the numeral 4 and must use exactly FOUR of them in each equation. In my first attempt – for the class assignment – I managed to get about 60 of them using the basic functions above. Later in life, when rediscovering my worksheet (and the problem), I finished the remaining equations utilizing factorials and other allowable advanced calculator functions. You may have to look this up on the inter-web to understand how to enter my giveaway, but I would encourage you to give it a try for yourself, if you haven’t already. Math is fun… right?

So, what does this have to do with giving away cards? Well, instead of asking you to answer trivia questions, or make adventurous choices, I am going to ask you to do a little math for your prizes - apologies to anyone from Canada reading this! Namely, I will ask you to provide an equation for a number between 1 and 100 for the “Four 4s” problem. Ideally, each entrant will claim a unique number for their entry.

Here’s the **prize structure**:

FOUR sport categories: Baseball, Basketball, Hockey, and Football/Other

12 prizes per category: FOUR 400 card lots, FOUR 40 card lots, and FOUR 4 card lots

A total of **48** prizes, with (400 + 40 + 4) x 4 = **1776** cards per category! *How patriotic!*

The sizes of the prizes will be determined by a random draw among the 12 entrants in each category.

In addition to the prizes above, there will be a dozen “**fireworks**” randomly inserted, with three seeded into each sport category, so there’s a 1 in 4 chance of being “hit” by a firework. These fireworks may be autographs, memorabilia, or low SN cards.

There also will be **52** “wild card” spots available for other entrants – bringing the total to **100 possible prizes**! Those who claim a “wild card” spot will receive a prize of 4 cards but will NOT get a chance at any of the fireworks.

Here’s **how to enter** my giveaway:

*“The Count-iguous 48”*

For those who want to choose their prize category preference and enter the random draws, you will have to submit a “Four 4s” SOLUTION to a unique NUMBER, your choice of sport CATEGORY, and your answer to the following BONUS question:

*What was the LOWEST number that my high-school-self did not figure out?*

Example entry:

**Number and Solution: 0 = (4 + .4) * (4 – 4)**

**Category: Hockey**

**Bonus: 4**

NOTE: For the Basketball category, please specify if you’d prefer NBA, WNBA or a mix. Also, for the Football/Other category, please note your preferred “Other” category as listed on TCDb, i.e., Multisport, Soccer, Tennis, Wrestling, Racing, etc.

*“The Wild Bunch”*

For those who just want four free cards (I’ll do my best to match your wants or favorites) or for those who missed out one of the 12 spots in a specific category - you will have to select a unique PLAYING CARD (rank and suit, no jokers!), and answer a different BONUS question:

*What was the LAST number that my older-than-high-school-self finally figured out?*

Example entry:

**Playing Card: Four of Diamonds**

**Bonus: 44**

Each **BONUS** question will award an **additional** **50-card prize** to the person who guesses correctly or gets closest without going over. The bonus guesses don’t have to be unique, so if there’s a tie, a 50-card prize could be split up.

I will create two Giveaway links and put them in the next couple posts of this thread – one for the group of 48 & one for the group of 52. Before you submit your entry to one or the other - **but not both!** - please check all previous entries to avoid duplication. As I said before, I want to get each person assigned to a unique number or card. I will keep these lists updated as best I can in this Forum thread, below their respective links.

Obviously, now in 2024, anyone can just look up the entire “Four 4s” solution list online. I’d hope you at least give it a try before googling it. Some of you may enjoy the satisfaction of figuring them out the old-fashioned way. I will check your submissions to make sure the math and format is correct – if not, you’ll have to fix it or try another one.

So, to recap, there will be 48 randomized prizes among the four categories with a dozen “fireworks” added in, plus 52 wild card prizes of 4 cards each, and finally, two BONUS question prizes of 50 cards each.

Doing a little more math… (1776 x 4) + 12 + (52 x 4) + (50 x 2) = 7424 cards

**7-4-24**!

That’s the day **SaintOrm’s “4th Annual” TCDb Giveaway** fires up!

I’ll keep the entry window open for a fortnight, i.e., two weeks. Once filled, I will determine the randomized prize size allocations & begin piecing together everyone’s card stacks. That process may take another week or two, since I have not pre-selected the prize packages like I have done in the past. These will be customized for each entrant, as best I can, so please be patient. I’ll do my best to mail them all by the end of the month.

Happy “Fourth” everyone!

p.s. there are **100** “four”s, “4”s, “for”s, and “iv”s (Roman numerals) in this post!
