I do not support Beckett nor those that use it as a "bible". Now, when I'm at a show and my fav dealers are looking at it then taking up to 50% off... In the end, value is in the end of the beholder. If BV seems to be a fair price to you, for whatever driving reason, then that's your answer.
And yes, I've bought at "BV" a couple times, but they were also set killers so I sucked it up.

I imagine it's easier to just get prices from a book than look at websites and gather multiple sources to get the general asking price of one card, so I see why sellers might go that way. However, where does Beckett get their prices? If they are the ones gathering data from multiple sources, then okay, maybe the price is sort of legit. If not, BV is practically useless except to be used as a starting point to talk a seller down from.

Beckett has long been accused for making up its prices. They say they follow market activity, but when shown what the market is at they reject the data, especially when the pricing goes down. Nevermind the sense they raise pricing to influence the market instead of actually portraying actual conditions.

In the mid- to late-90s, my wife and I were buying a lot of hockey cards, and because of that, we were also getting the monthly hockey Becketts. (I think I have about 5 to 6 years of them on a shelf here.) Since we were primarily collecting one player, we started to be able to predict what the pricing was going to be for that player with specific serial numbers or insertion rates, despite what actual sales were. So, in my opinion, from my experience about 20-25 years ago, Beckett makes up their own prices and does not reflect true market pricing.

-- Dan -- Note: Please see my profile for more info regarding trading (section updated 10/25/2023). I have added a large portion of my inventory to the site, and currently have trading turned off (details are in my profile). I have (finally) unearthed my 2 very large boxes of Star Company minor league sets and they are available (email for details).

To buy or not to Buy a Beckett? I would say NO.
It is not worth it, and a lot of collectors just walk away from you when you say I price by Beckett.
Lot of us remember dealers selling per Beckett and buying per Tuff Stuff in the 90s.

NO. Beckett is as crooked as a road throught he Rockies. THey are a family of collectors / buyers / sellers so a conflict of interest is there right from the start.
Even if you don't buy into that theory, a monthly guide where prices fluctuate as Beckett demonstrates each month is not an accurate gauge of real prices. All monthly price guides are faulty for this. The price guide I used to use to in determining what I was willing to pay was the yearly SCD. And having several years of this guide helped compare prices for more modern cards; the vintage cards were stable in their indicated values. Of course, that was before COVID and the influx of loose money into the hobby.
The trades I despise the most are those that begin with "The BV on both sides are about equal or xx cents in your favour." For one, that tells me that the other member does not value cards the way I do and second, chances are the trade is in the other member's favour no matter what he stated in his opening line.
This is my opinion only and does not reflect in any way TCDb's view or opinion of th esubject matter.

Replacement value for THAT card is closer to reality for THAT card at THAT Moment. What will it cost You, right now, to replace THAT card? That can change from Week to Week and becomes more expensive when trying to purchase that ONE card. When You buy a whole bunch of trading cards in bulk, the replacement value of the card goes WAY DOWN, simply because of Your good fortune of buying a whole bunch of cards, and THAT card happens to be in the bulk lot.
Plus prices can be all over the place, and change over time, so true replacement cost & value may be closer to the average of what You find for that card on eBay, COMC and AMAZON (sometimes unrealistically overpriced). Sometimes the forgotten factor is the CONDITION of the Card, which is rather important to consider, for ALL Cards, especially VINTAGE. It comes down to what someone will pay (in the eye of the beholder). Thus, how valuable is THAT Card to You? Truly ALL TRADING CARDS MATTER and have value, worth, and significance. HAPPY COLLECTING TO ALL!!!

I bought a Beckett annual in 2000 right after I started collecting. I've never felt a need to buy an 'updated' copy because the newer ones still have all of the same errors as the one I have. (And the subject of my primary PC hasn't had many new cards made since then.)
It has been a useful reference over the years, but then again this site didn't exist back then. If I were just starting out today and found TCDB, I would have very little use for a Beckett catalog.

I don’t see a point in buying Beckett anymore since all the prices are determined by sold prices online. It’s much more up to date and easier to lookup as long as you get internet service.
The stereotype now is if someone uses a Beckett for pricing they are old and don’t how to use technology. While not always true I sometimes feel they still need to understand online pricing and book value.
