I have to disagree with all of you. This is a smart play on the ebay site. First off, there is an "Or Best Offer" on it. I disagree with them having a shipping cost on something listed so high, but I don't disagree with the BIN listing. The smart sellers on ebay list NEW low-SN cards with a really high BIN, but put an OBO on it. Any uninformed buyer will pay a LOT of money for a card that they "think" is seriously rare. An intelligent collector will be happy to win it for 25-33% of the BIN number. But a true aficianado will only offer 10% of that BIN and is fine with losing it to someone willing to blow their cash on a card with an unproven market. NEW brings big money for unknown futures while OLD brings big money for a completely known reason.
I have two examples of this.
#1 - I busted a box of 2009 UD Icons MLB shortly after it came out. Not only did I hit an exact pull I wanted ( Ozzie Smith Lettermen card SN40), but I also pulled a Pablo Sandoval RC AU card from that box. I traded that AU card for an Ozzie Smith 1979 Topps RC. My Ozzie RC is still my favorite Ozzie card of the 600+ that I own and still books for $90, while the Sandoval AU'd RC has dropped to $30 since I made the trade. "Hot off the presses" rarely beats a classic card!
#2 - Last summer I bought a card and I spent 3x more than I have ever spent on a single card. This is still the ONLY card I have ever paid $100+ to get, but I really wanted it and I had the money for it. I still feel that it was totally worth the money I spent on it! The card was this:
2006 Press Pass Eclipse Teammates Autographs Jimmie Johnson / Jeff Gordon - AU, SN25

The scans and book value are my posting. Not only is the card the most valuable single card in my collection and has AU's of 2 drivers that currently have 10 NASCAR Cup Series Championships b/t them, but it is also my 1st Jeff Gordon autograph. Any NASCAR collector knows how expensive those are to acquire! I have 6 Johnson AU's right now and have traded away 2 others in the past year or so.
As for the card in question here, I wouldn't pay more than $50 for any one of the 10 copies available. Mostly b/c I don't collect him or his team, but also b/c I don't buy into 'future' cards.
Poppadingo, I'd say YES to your question. The #1 SN card almost always pulls a higher sell price than any other except Jersey #'d cards. The chance of a JSY#'d card in most sports is really low when sets have such a low SN. Unfortunately for me, Ozzie Smith's jersey number was 1, so I doubt I'll ever own one of his JSY# cards.
NO PWE's EVER!!! PLZ PM me 1st before sending any offer. ONLY selling cards as of March 2024. No trades or purchases right now.
