Year: 1960

Set: Fleer (Rate)

Card: #105 Joe Schaffer

“ Well, this guy was only around for one year. He played in 14 games, had one interception that he took for 19 yards, 0 TDs, and an AV of 4. (AV is a baseball reference stat that puts a number on a season, the higher the better. It's basically football WAR. 4 is an average season, and an MVP type season would be 17-21) ” -BigBoyOnWheels   3
“ Little known fact … like hockey, some players in football were grandfathered in and not required to wear helmets. ” -Tscastle   3
“ I still love these cards from my childhood. You had Topps but whatever Fleer put out was sort of a bonus. Something new to collect. I believe these came with gum. Fleer gum had a better aroma than Topps and tasted better too.. Topps smelled stale and tasted just as bad, ” -NJDevils   3
“ Why is there an "H" above his name? ” -jdogg1228   5
“ What's amazing is that this was probably considered in 1960 as a design that was pushing the limits of creativity . . . That's not to say it is a bad card . . . I actually like it . . . ” -georgecf   1
“ Love 1960s vintage. ” -captkirk42   1
“ That’s a lot of green and red for a Bills card ” -pugchump   1

A proper 60's design. A bit of a classic.

Lots of the cards in this set are of players who never suited up in a game. Are they rookie or post-career cards?

interesting set!

The "H" above his name is just the goal post for the nameplate graphic.

Oh that's a gpalpost.

At first glance, it just looks like a random H.

Be sure to check out my User List, BASEBALL'S BIG GUYS. It's a long list (and getting longer) of the heaviest players in the MLB. It gets updated nearly every day. Check it out!

It was a nominee for best list of 2021. Although it did not win, it's a lot of fun to scroll through!

I am actually currently working on completing this set and have actively sought out the players that are still alive to get their cards autographed. Most of the players have responded back and told me about the joys of playing and most of them ended their career due to knee injuries.
