according to BaseballcardPedia, it looks like the knothole was one of three designs Bowman was looking at for the 1956 set which never ended up happening. Looks like Bowman was going to go with a double image design that honestly doesn't look much better than this imo.

Reminds me of 1958 Hires Rootbeer cards.
