Thanks to curiosity piqued by tscastle's comment, I just learned that  US zip codes were created in 1963. Prior to that, a postal zone was used for some larger cities such as the 45 on the card

The card seems simple today but when the original came out in 1949 it would have been an awesome time to collect. Best looking major issue since at least 1941 and also cardboard introduction to numerous Black stars including Jackie Robinson and Satchel Paige. (Most cataloguing puts the Leaf set before this one, but that is not accurate. The cards known as "1948" or "1948-49" Leaf were a 1949 issue like this Bowman one but (in my opinion) not as nice.

I really don't appreciate the reprint of an irregular shaped card. It's rather annoying to collect them along with the mostly normal cards in the same years' set.

Really, Gil Hodges should be in the hall of fame. I hope the veteran's committee gets him in, though I'm not holding my breath. Chick Hafey and George Kelly are in the hall of fame because of them after all (Not to be rude to them, but they are not of the same caliber of a hall of fame player. They got in because of former teammates and reporters who covered their glory days making up the voters.)

Didn't think I'd get this far from building robots in the garage, but here we are now. Wish I could make a robot that could scan every image of my cards in here...

The original is a nice card. Reprints just aren't exciting. Not usually a fan of them.

I'll second the notion that Gil Hodges should be in the Hall of Fame.  He really should get combo credit for overall contribution to the game as a player and a manager, as opposed to this silly notion that he should be separately judged for both.

I hate reprints because it generates false excitement making me think I have found an awesome true vintage card.
