Year: 2008

Set: Upper Deck Documentary (Rate)

Card: #3714 Ian Kinsler

“ the blurb at the bottom says the Rangers won with pitching, and on the back, it talks about the starter Matt Harrison, so why exactly is the front a pic of Ian Kinsler, and making this a Kinsler card? ” -abide

“ Topps Now before there was Topps Now. A very ambitious project by UD that ultimately fails to answer the question: why? Maybe if my Mariners had a spectacular 2008 season I could see myself buying these cards. (Spoiler alert: they didn't). Otherwise, these should be relegated to the dime or less bin at your LCS ” -ketchupman36
  1
“ Very ambitious set, which I liked in theory. Too bad there were so many recycled photos with most of the photos having nothing to do with the game being depicted. ” -jupiterhill
  8
“ Base set: 4890 cards. Hobby box: 24 packs. Cards per pack: 15. Gold parallel version of 4890 card base set: 1 per pack. Price per pack: $3.00. People who have completed this set: 0 ” -Id8jlb8666
  1
“ This was an interesting and ambitious idea for a set, but ultimately I am disappointed in it. This card is a prime example. The images of the players are reused over and over, the the synopsis on the back highlights the work of Matt Harrison, yet the player pictured is Ian Kinsler and almost certainly not a photo from the game referenced. If this set had the player highlighted in the write up with a photo from that particular game this set would be top notch. ” -rmpaq5
  1
“ OK design but the concept is too overboard and poorly executed. The concept was to document every game of the season, making the set grossly large with 1,000s of cards. Each player has 20some cards or more with each card having the exact same photo even though each card is documenting a different game. It results in a very boring set.. ” -captkirk42

“ This set is really cool. One card per team per game for the whole season. Must be annoying to collect the whole set though but I would totally buy singles of games that I went to. ” -pugchump

“ Interesting concept, probably not feasible to go all the way and have an image from each game instead of blocks of reused images. ” -jackal726

“ Is there anything on the card itself to indicate that it is Ian Kinsler, or do I need a checklist to know that? The idea of the series is too ambitious . . . A day-by-day account of the season includes too many lowlights, when nothing significant happened . . . The card itself is fine, but so what? Do I need to have it? . . . ” -georgecf

“ Oh boy. Anybody who has ever tried to add one of these cards to their collection on here, let alone uploaded the checklist, will hate this set. Should make for some good comment section... ” -pjdionne12

“ This was a great idea that was terribly executed. They should have put the player or big play of the game on the card using a picture from that game instead of the same pictures and players used over and over. That said this is a great set to give the history of season. ” -goreds00

“ This is a creative concept and really was a forerunner of the Topps Now cards, but honestly, I don't think every game in a season requires 2 cards. Maybe if you were a Phillies fan, you'd chase the team set to remember winning the World Series that year, but I don't need 163 cards to remember that my Cardinals finished in 4th place that year. ” -vanstryland

“ meh, not a parallel set needed. ” -parsley24

“ The most unnecessary and poorly executed set in the history of trading cards. Take a bow, Upper Deck :P ” -mkaz80

“ Unfamiliar with this set, but I am intrigued by any set with almost 5,000 cards. ” -muskie027

Imagine as a kid who's parents don't collect cards and you tell your parents. I need a 5000 count box for my set of 2008 upper deck documentary set. I love the idea but it is too much for a set collector.

I never really thought about it, but you would need a 5k count box just for the base set and doesn't inclue the inserts and parallels (yes this set had those too).

Like I said in the comment, I thought in theory it was a good idea, but they needed to work on the set better.  My first decision would be to scrap the gold parallel and if you wanted to feature gold cards, make them as an update set for the postseason games.  Second would be to have the player on the card feature who the card talks about on the back (the biggest problem with the set).  I can forgive them for not using photos from the actual game, but if it was a successful set, it would be something I'd like to have seen them improve on.

Overall it is a set better suited for team collectors not so much set collectors.  If you do want to get just your teams cards, some people actually had some for sale on ebay last time I looked a few months ago.  It was more than I wanted to pay, but it was nice to see people at least completed some team sets.

I like the idea better than Topps Now, but I think its a set that would be better utilized as a Topps Now series (i.e. printing one team card each day, but only that day, so if 43 people wanted the Tigers card which they might have lost, they can have it).  I'd set it up with an option of ordering a week's worth of cards at the beginning of the week though, so you could get them a bit cheaper and guaranteed (in case you forget a day).

I thought in theory it was a good idea, but they needed to work on the set better.

I find that this is the problem with most card productions since the early 1990s. Often when I look at cards produced since then, I wonder what schmucks are hired by the companies and who reviews the proposed designs and cards before going to press. As everyone highlighted, this set has so many problems that it should never have gotten passed the Proposal in the process of producing a set.

I really think that many of the employees in the card companies are not collectors themselves. Everything from the multiple designs in a set, the random alignment of the front-to-back of cards in a set, to the card number being located at different spots on the back, to the card number being in a color that on its background is almost unreadable (if you want to see the worst example of this, go to https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/1360/cid/238643/1999-Upper-Deck-Century-Legends-35-Shoeless-Joe-Jackson). IMO the lack of thought in the design and production of cards is probably the biggest dissatisfier in the hobby.

For the record, I finished the base set and would like to put a dent in the gold parallel.

Yes, well done.  I too would eventually look to completing it but I am not active on ebay.  What I do have was had in large lot buys.  Till I get in the 80% range, I probably will not chase them much.

That is impressive! How long did it take you to complete?

I hadn't thought of that either. I just did a quick check on the calculator for colllectors who use binders. IF storing the set in binders its takes 276 sheets/pages if you double up (18 cards in 9 pockets) or 555 pages/sheets for single card per pocket..The number of binders needed depends on which spine width you use.I have never figured out the number of sheets to binder ratio. I'm sure somewhere someone has.

I thought of that at first but then realized that that is harder than a 5000k box

I have the complete Phillies team set. However, I am also trying to put together all the Phillies playoff cards of this style which were inserted into 2009 UD series 1 as an insert. Those cards are VERY hard to come by, and I don't think I will ever finish that set as a result, which is pretty disappointing since this was the Phillies World Series year. But I do have all 163 regular season cards, so there's that.

I also agree with the other commenters though, great idea in concept, poor execution mostly due to the recycled use of photos. Missed opportunity if you ask me.
