Card: #211 Phil Hennigan

“ Long live chief Wahoo. ” -bigdawg315

“ I'm the guy who likes buybacks. Basically making parallel sets for years that didn't have parallel sets. Phil Hennigan fans get some new cards to go after. But maybe stamping over the fake signature was a bad idea. ” -switzr1

“ I love the older cards, not a fan of the buybacks. ” -FiresNBeers

“ The Ultimate Topps Heritage buyback collector gets a moment in the sun! I'm sure there will be noise from anti-buyback people, but Jack loves them and so do I- I'm trying to do sets of 2015 Topps Originals, 2017 Rediscover Topps, 2014 75th Anniversary, 2016 65th Anniversary, and more! ” -Dave Sosidka

“ I am probably a rare one, but i never liked the 1971 design and so the 2020 design made me turn up my nose as well. That being said, i watched beansballcardblog break last night of black A&G and found out he loved this set. SO i am sure he will comment. ” -parsley24

“ never understood the purpose of these sorts of cards, but at least they drew from a set with a good design. ” -DarkSide830

“ Love 70s "vintage" HATE STAMPED BUYBACKS. Now if they simply bought back the cards and didn't stamp them I would be OK with it, but the do stamp them. I used to be against it because of ruining the card's resale value, but I don't care about that part much anymore. It is is more about the aesthetic value of the card being ruined and defaced. Now a small stamp on the back might make me reconsider this like when they reprint a card and add the current copyright info line where the original didn't have one or was a much shorter line. ” -captkirk42

“ I've seen some people don't like these, but I think they're cool personally! ” -bkklaos

“ I get that Topps wanted to differentiate between the original and the buyback, but the stamp ruins an otherwise fantastic card. ” -IfbBirdsCards

“ Fun fact, Phil Hennigan was drafted into the Vietnam War as an artilleryman. ” -NickyCollects

“ Never was a huge fan of the Heritage issues. Just another Topps product. ” -Phil

“ I actually kinda like these, but it raises a question. How did they get the card before stamping it? Did they just buy one from EBay or did they have a bunch just sitting around? ” -StarrsCards

“ Don't understand this set, but I do love 71! ” -Soarin22

I wonder how many guys had to have their Topps pics taken while they were visiting Yankee Stadium over the years.

Love older buybacks! I buy the 2017 Rediscover Topps cards whenever I see them - most are in the 25-cent bin.I have a few of these older Heritage ones too in good shape.

What exactly is a 'buyback'?

All New York Yankees cards are welcome to join my collection.

I'm also interested in recreating my main childhood collection, which consisted of mostly 1974 and 1978-1982.

Topps buys its old cards back from some old time dealers, stamps them, and reinserts them in packs.

I'm addicted to collecting these because it brings back "the thrill of the hunt',  trying to collect the cards I collected as a kid.

When I was a kid I didn't have much money and couldn't just go out and buy a box or a set. I had to collect one pack at a time. When I would finally complete a set they would go in the closet and hardly ever be looked at again.

Now, I can afford to buy complete sets, but to me, that's no challenge or fun. Once you buy a complete set how often do you look at them? For me, they just go in the closet.

When I find a Buyack I need I get the same thrill I got as a kid when I would open a pack and see a player I needed.

I do think it's pretty cool that cards can make it through circulation and back into packs in such great condition.

That being said, it hurts my heart when a stamped buyback card is one that I need for the original set.

Nice original but I can't say I like buybacks or see the point of them.

Oh look! They ruined a nice 1971 card to make more money. A little off center. Corner tip. Maybe used to be "excellent" condition? A PSA 4 or 5. Now it's "poor, MK," a PSA "Auth." So sad.

That stamp on a leaders card is just dreadful as it blots out someone's face!  Any idea how much Topps paid to people for these buybacks?  The Indians had five different uniforms in five seasons (1969-73) ... the 1970 version shown in the card was the classiest of the five.  I wonder if Hennigan received a World Series share from the '73 Mets.  He pitched lousy for them, but was there for half the season before getting exiled to Tidewater.
