Year: 2002

Set: MLB Showdown Pennant Run (Rate)

Card: #072 Kevin Mench

“ I usually don't like these game cards but MLB Showdown I did like. The designs were nice, the pictures were great and I liked the insert cards that showed a little insight into baseball. Sadly I don't think I own any of the 2002 set, I will have to look into getting some soon. ” -davidhandberry

“ Too much going on in these cards. But that is my own opinion as they obviously were collected by some. ” -parsley24

“ Great baseball strategy game! Played in a league for three years before it died out. ” -jayoneill

“ Game ON. I love/hate these Showdown cards. I have never been a "card gamer" just a collector of the TCG, CCG or whatever you want to call them card games. This 2002 edition (the first one I think) is a bit too busy with the game stats design. ” -captkirk42

“ I do like the NFL Showdown cards but this set just doesn't look very good. Baseball stats are too much on this set. ” -MattyIce2014

“ really cool card. definitely a cool collector card ” -cthayes25

“ I never played any of the TCG/CCG games but I do have a couple MLB Showdown cards in my Griffey collection. But I would never work on a set. ” -Corky

“ These set's checklists were awesome. Pretty much everybody that got playing time got a card. I love that. For many key relief pitchers that I really liked, these are the only cards they ever got. ” -chvlDm

Initally looks like there's a bit too much going on with this card, until you realise that it can be used in a card game.

It's nice that the stats/numbers don't dominate so it can be enjoyed as a 'normal' card.

I wonder thouhg how many people actually played the game? With the soccer cards I've collected and traded over the years I've very rarely found anyone who played/played them.

Played this game all the time back in the day.  My best friend and I would save our money until we could buy more packs.  Didn't do as much with the 2002 because for some reason the store we bought them from just didn't seem to have them that year.  We got to know each other's team (cards) so well that after he moved we still played over the phone, trusting that the other was being honest about their strategy cards and dice rolls.

Good memories.  He and I still occasionally pull them out and play each other if we ever get together, which isn't very often.

I loved playing this game as a kid, this and MVP Baseball 2004-2005 (Best baseball video game ever) really drew me into baseball.

For the last two years I've been working on a master set of all these MLB/NBA/NFL Showdown sets. 2001 MLB Showdown 1st edition foils, NBA Showdown Star players, and those pesky promo cards for MLB/NFL are all tough pieces to find.

Seems these sets get a lot of hate, I personally love them and they've have drawn me into the card collecting community.

I have a bunch of these and played it when it first came out, but haven't touched it since...I still have all of the first set in an OFFICIAL MLB Showdown binder...woooooo....

Side story...was in a non-sports card shop and Sean Casey came in to buy some cards for his kid and an MLB Showdown card was the only thing around of he we had to get him to sign.  VERY nice guy!

If anyone is looking for MLB Showdown base cards (2001-2005, non-foils), I have a lot for trade.

Great memories with MLB Showdown.  My girlfriend (now wife) and I played this all the time back in college.  I went back a couple years ago and made new cards to play with my kids.  Still a fun game.
