Random Card of the Day

Year: 2005

Set: Bowman - Gold (Rate)

Card: #110 Roger Clemens

“ Real boring on this one. ” -muskie027

“ If Bowman changed a few things I would be a fan. The first, is the 50 parallels for each card and the second is the sentences about the player. Take this design, it is very nice, front and back but they had to ruin it with redoing it several more times and the back is hurt by the sentences, one paragraph or trivia would be better. ” -davidhandberry

“ I like the design. As the Gold parallel this is probably a pretty thick card and prone to chipping. I remember hearing the news talk about him a lot, usually with some controversy, but I can't say I remember what the whole deal was. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ Very nice card. Usually facsimile sigs don't do much for me but I like this one. ” -chvlDm

“ Just put him in with an asterisk and get over yourselves already. ” -UKboogie

“ He's not a favorite player to root for (I wonder what I would think of him if he had ever played for the Cardinals?) but he unequivocally belongs in the Hall of Fame. My opinion only. Also, not a bad looking card all around. ” -Brimose

“ i recently have came across these cards from this set. I do not like the fake autograph area on these cards. The back is nice tho. ” -parsley24

“ An early modern Bowman set. I like it. ” -captkirk42

@ Billy - It's well-known that he used steroids in the late 90's when dealing with injuries to help him come back to the game faster. That is what the whole deal was about his career. But the same can be said for other pitchers (Curt Schilling is suspected too). Who knows how many used them far earlier in the decade or even the previous quarter of the century.

Honestly, I think Clemens should be in the HOF. He had many years of similar stats after his injuries when steriods were "illegal" as he did before he ever used them. I don't think the power-hitters should be in though (Bonds, McGwire, Sosa, etc.). They didn't use them to help recover, only to get stronger while still healthy.

As far as this specific card/set: I'm a bit conflicted. The card looks decent but could be much better. The picture is nice (and YES, I spelled that right), but the border is lacking something. Or maybe it has too much of something with those "dashes" on the sides. I've always hated the facsimile signature on cards, even vintage ones. For the back, the border is the worst part. I don't mind it missing more stats b/c of the picture. So only some verbal bio info could fit into the available space on the back. The only way to change it for more stats would be to turn the back vertical like the backs from the 80's and such, but I'm not sure that would look right with a photo. The back photo is what I like most about this card and would want to keep it on the back somehow.

I am impressed by this Bowman set.   Might be the only set where the numbers make sense...they are actual numbers.  None of that #39BBCWFP stuff

It's so cute that Billy doesn't really know about one of the best/most controversial players in baseball in the last 40 years....

I am not a baseball fan. I find it boring. I tried to give it a chance a few times but I couldn't make it through a single game. I recognize his name because he was a big name, but all I know about him is that he was a controversial baseball player. Do you know who all the important people in my sports are? Even if there is name recognition, do you know why they are important?

VERY slow trading due to health problems. Not transferrable so safe to trade with, just moving is painful and can't always access the cards.

To back Billy up, I'm listening to a podcast that came out within the last 6-7 years or so discuss cryogenics, and discussed noted persons, and urban legends (Walt Disney), associated with it.

There was NO mention of Ted Williams, despite the controversy of the legal battle over where his remains wound up being recent headline news.

The two hosts on the show were not sports fans at all, and to further drive home that point, one, at the time, was in his late 40s-early 50s and a life long North Eastern US resident.  So it would have been hard for him, if he followed the sports world at all, not to at least have some recall of the major news story of the battle over Williams' remains.

Another.  I don't remember the context, but NFL Dratt guru Mel Kiper, Jr co-hosted, he still may, I haven't listened to a show on the network in many years, a weekly general sports talk show on Saturdays on ESPN Radio's national feed.

No-hitters at Yankee Stadium came up, may have been an anniversary of Wells' or Cone's, and his co-host asked him if he remembered the first perfecto in the Stadium's history.  Kiper didn't even hazard a guess!  Not even an "I have no clue...wasn't there that famous World Series one or something" to even hint that he at least had heard somewhere of Don Larsen's iconic performance!

His retort when pressed about lack of retention when it came to well known general sports trivia, despite being well known for spouting random facts and details about football draft hopefuls every year, was that he instantly forgets all the knowledge once he no longer has the need for it.
