Year: 1991

Set: Impel Marvel Universe II (Rate)

Card: #152 Avengers West Coast

“ Although I prefer DC over Marvel, they have always had better cards than DC. Apparently the guidelines stating properly cropped does not apply to whoever posted the scan. There is no white border on the top of the card. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ One of the few non-sport sets I still own. And West Coast Avengers #6 was the first Marvel comic I ever bought (excluding licenced properties such as Star Wars, GI Joe, and Transformers). Impel would of course change its name to Skybox about a year after this set came out. ” -bevans

“ I prefer the East Coast Avengers. ” -carthage44

“ No.... This was when there were just too many weird parallels and cards and card sets. ” -parsley24

“ Cool Non-Sport. Ah The Avengers West Coast. When this title first started I was still majorly into comic books. I have quite a few of the first few issues. I'd have to check the box they are in to see which ones I actually have. The Marvel Universe card series is pretty good. If I recall it was pretty well balanced, not Spider-Man heavy or Capt. America heavy like other Marvel Comic sets are. Impel was a good card company. It was bought out by Skybox which in turn, as many card collectors know, got bought up by Fleer. ” -captkirk42

“ Thank the lord the MCU didn't use "classic costumes." ” -rmpaq5

“ Don't confuse us with those East Coast Avengers - we want NOTHING to do with those guys. ” -royals

“ Who's the guy in pink? ” -Sportzcommish

“ Hmmm. Nope. Prefer East Coast Avengers. ” -Joshua825

“ I had NO IDEA about the annual softball game! Do they still do that now, 25+ years later? What's the series record? ” -kents_stuff

“ Um, maybe the East Coast was cooler? I am unfamiliar. I am not opposed to comic stuff, just to be clear, I even like a lot of it, I just don't know this bunch, except for maybe is that Iron Man in the back? ” -muskie027

Certainly not the best card from this set but I liked this set so much back then that I completed the whole thing. I even chased the hologram set. Both the base and hologram sets are STILL easier to complete than the 1990 set today! I like the 1990 borders/design much better, but the 1991 set had a much better overall layout for the entire set.

@parsley24 - You are clearly mistaken about this release. There are NO parallels and the only insert set was 5 hologram cards. It wasn't until Skybox bought Impel that the confusing sets began for Marvel Universe.

@bevans - Impel didn't change their name! Skybox BOUGHT Impel. Skybox already existed and mostly made NBA cards before the acquisition of Impel.

@commish - The "pink guy" is Hawkeye, who is not mentioned on the back of the card. I noticed many oddities with the team cards on Thanksgiving Day when I was showing this set to my nephew. Some cards omit a name while the character is clearly on the front. Other cards give a name for a character that is not on the card at all.

@muskie - That IS Iron Man. He is also listed in the roster on the back. If I'm not mistaken, it's well-known that Iron Man was a Californian. ;)

@Commish you mean the blonde guy in the middle next to Wonder Man? Or do you mean Wonder Man?

  • Archer looking dude = Hawkeye
  • Armored guy = Iron Man
  • Tiger girl in black bikini = Tigra
  • Blonde guy in safari jacket = Hank Pym (Ant-Man, Giant Man)
  • Pink skined guy in black shirt = Wonder Man
  • Woman in front left white/purple outfit = The Wasp
  • Woman in red costume w/cape = Scarlet Witch

I collect: Baseball, Football, Hockey, Mostly Vintage pre1980, My Homie teams - Washington/Baltimore Teams Senators (Twins, Rangers), Expos/Nationals, Redskins, Capitals, Bullets/Wizards - HOFers - Non-sport (mostly TV shows and movies).

I actually just did a random giveaway of almost this entire set on Twitter @Jimmymak22 a few weeks ago. Funny as I haven't thought it about it in years. I dig it out of the closet, do a giveaway and now here it is again. The force is telling me something.

No, I had it exactly right. Impel had an NBA licence and produced the Hoops and Skybox brands, and subsequently changed the name of the whole company to Skybox to match their sports card division. They weren't "bought by Skybox"; it was always the same company.
