Year: 1966

Set: Topps (Rate)

Card: #3 Sam Mele

“ Great card! I love to get coach cards, especially when it's a former player. Great text on the back here. Why are coaches called managers in baseball? I truly don't know. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ This takes me back. No matter how bad the card, you always like the ones from when you were younger. ” -NJdevils

“ What an awesome card of the day! It is my from my favorite all-time set and from my favorite team! I love everything about the 1966 cards. I know part of it is that they were the first cards I ever collected as a boy. Wouldn't it be nice to go back and re-create opening up those 1966 wax packs? I would spend my entire allowance, which was probably a dollar a week, on these cards. I'm not sure what they were, probably 10 to 25 cents a pack. Sam Mele managed the Twins to the 1965 World Series, where, unfortunately, they had to face Sandy Koufax in game seven. Sam is still alive, 94 years old, and living in Massachusetts. For the Twins 2015 50th anniversary celebration of the 1965 World Series, he appeared on the video board with a message to the fans and his former players. ” -twinscollector34

“ OH MY! So glad to see vintage pop up on the card of the day. At first glance I thought it might be a recent Heritage card. Love it. ” -captkirk42

“ Such a classy looking card. ” -carthage44

“ ...celebrating 50 years of greatness. ” -RoundtheDiamond87

“ Interesting read, and nice photo. This just feels like a card that Topps actually cared about producing, ras opposed to modern base cards churned out simply to fill packs (and card manufacturers' pockets). ” -dilemma19

“ Hey, why isn't he a-hollerin'? ” -Lea DeFoote

“ I don.t know anything about the man, or team from those days to be honest. That said, gotta love ANY vintage :) ” -engine614

“ I'll take vintage over modern any day. Even this plain, simple, no-frills model. For some reason I love the vintage cards that have the chicken wire in the background. Maybe because the chickens were my responsibility as a kid on our farm. ” -C2Cigars

“ Too bad this isn't one of the hollering managers pictures. Still a good card. ” -switzr1

“ 1966 is such a classic design. Sam's real name was Sabath. Skippered the Twins to the AL pennant in 1965. ” -marcbrubaker

“ I love it!!! This is what a baseball card should be. Everything about it is beautiful. It is classic and on the old card stock. It is no foiled, glossed, memoribila-ized, auto-graphed, special inserted, short printed, or any other aspect of the modern card. This card represents collecting cards for the simple sake of collecting cards. The throwbacks! Nothing is better! ” -muskie027
