Random Card of the Day

Year: 2013

Set: Topps - Commemorative Patch (Rate)

Card: #CP-22 Chris Sale

“ I like this card. I don't know why, but I've always liked the manufactured patches. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ I guess that the popularity of the patch cards from jerseys were such a hit that companies decided to make their own patches to put in cards. Personally, I can't think of anything more useless for a company to try to pawn off as "collectible". In The Game actually made commemorative patches that they then cut up to put in the cards. This card isn't to that level. ” -vrooomed

“ This is one of my favorite sleeve patches in baseball. ” -duaned99

“ I am not a big fan of the "manufactured" patches. The card is nice enough, but it's like a fake game-used card to me. ” -suomibear8

“ In some ways, I actually prefer these manufactured patches to the "real" ones. A least here, the company is making no claims the patch is legitimate, it is only there for artistic purposes. ” -DaClyde

“ Sweet card! Sale is a STUD! Go White Sox! ” -carthage44

“ Not a fan of "commemorative patch" cards. They're even worse than "game used base" baseball cards. ” -CluelessJoe

“ manufactured patch = manufactured demand I'd rather they didn't make them, but since they do make them I'm glad to see a scan of it ” -jackal726

“ The White Sox uniforms are classic and modern at the same time, despite being 25 years old. ” -jlaz10

“ I dig game used relic cards. Manufactured, not so much. ” -Id8jlb8666

I know I'm in a HUGE minority here, but I don't like cards with patches of cloth in them.  I'm a CARD collector, not a SCRAP CLOTH collector.

Someday my cards may double in value and then be worth half of what I paid for them.

Nothing like manufactured current day "relics".      These are okay,  I just wish they weren't being tried to be passed off as valuable.   I know Topps legally  avoided that but kids dont know that.  They think they got something valuable.

You all do realize that ALL cards are simply manufactured to sell to collectors right? I like getting these because there's no pretense, no wondering "where did this come from?", it's just a new technology (to cards) no different than a refractor or parallel.

You're right Billy it is a new technology, but kids who are trying to get into the hobby now, are being tricked into thinking this was worn by the player on the card. That is not good for our hobby in the long run. I agree with NJ on this one. The way to sell this product should come from a differant angle.

Well, as long as they can read English, I don't think that will be much of an issue :)

Question for Billy.   As the local racing expert,  do they have patches for racing?   Seems they would due to the nature of what they wear.

I prefer this to a piece of gum or a handful of cigarettes.

I'm going to reevaluate how I collect after the new year. It's just getting way too expensive for the new stuff.  Sometimes I just want to buy a pack, not a whole box or even blaster.

Absolutely. Take a look on Ebay at some of the 1/1 patches Press Pass has produced. They are doing something now where instead of getting a piece of the patch, you get the entire patch, and an autograph, in a booklet form. They look really good, but I doubt I'll ever be able to justify spending the money to get one.

I also have some less impressive patches in my collection, which you can see here on pages 3 & 4: www.tradingcarddb.com/List.cfm/lid/485/Patches!
