Set: Topps (Rate)

Card: #1 Steve Carlton

“ Been a while since we had a card #1 come up as Card of the Day...if ever. Not really a great picture, it makes it look like he does not have a left hand. ” -Billy Kingsley

“ My first true collection of cards. ” -addysdaddy

“ I thought Topps could've used a better photo back in 1982. No hand and no forearm! Although, I guess that's why he was so good, hid the ball effectively. And yes, he was my favorite pitcher while I was growing up. ” -vrooomed

“ A bit "freaky" with them catching him where it looks like his arm has been severed, yet good action shot none the less! A lefty (like myself) and a great one! I've had people tell me over the years that us "lefties" are special...I tell them, although not unhappy to be one, it really is a curse, as we live in a "right handed" world! ” -bkklaos

“ I hate to say this, but...he kind of looks like Jim Abbott in this photo. ” -revnorb

“ He would have been the best pitcher of his time if it were not for Nolan Ryan. ” -deporcoruña

“ Bad action shot. Carlton looks like an amputee. ” -ThemightyOx

“ A little known fact is that the Phillies used maroon in the 80's instead of their standard red. ” -jlaz10

Remember when he finished his career in Chicago. a shadow of his former self. this set looked so "modern" in its day

My son got his autograph at a card show in St. Louis maybe 7-8 years ago. My son (about 16 yrs old)asked him a question about intentionally throwing at batters. Carlton couldn't have been nicer. He talked to him for at least 10 minutes, ignoring the fact there were 30-40 people in line waiting. Classy guy to take the time to talk, shake his hand and share baseball insights.

Great story kcjays...always nice to hear about the "class" people of any sport!
